Retaining walls in Anderson, SC are built to hold back soil, create level surfaces on slopes, and enhance the landscape’s functionality and appearance. While they are designed to be strong and durable, retaining walls can quickly deteriorate if proper drainage is not in place. Water is one of the biggest threats to the integrity of any retaining wall. Without a way to divert moisture away from the structure, pressure from trapped water can cause cracks, bulging, or even collapse. Fortunately, there are proven drainage solutions that can help protect your retaining wall from costly water damage.

Today, we’ll share some of the best drainage solutions to protect your retaining wall from water damage. Garrett Precast is a professional company that specializes in manufacturing and supplying a wide range of precast products, including retaining walls, seawalls, concrete parking stops, septic tanks, and more. Our team understands what goes into keeping retaining walls in top shape.

Weep Holes

Weep holes are small openings built into the bottom of the retaining wall that allow water to drain through instead of collecting behind the structure. Typically spaced every few feet, these holes give excess moisture an easy outlet to relieve water pressure. Weep holes are highly effective when paired with proper backfill and gravel.

Gravel Backfill

Filling the area directly behind the retaining wall with crushed stone or gravel improves drainage. Unlike dense soil, gravel allows water to flow freely through the material and into drainage channels or pipes. A well-graded gravel layer at least 12 inches thick will prevent water buildup and improve the wall’s overall stability. Often, a layer of landscape fabric is placed between the gravel and the native soil to keep the drainage layer clear of debris and silt over time.

French Drains

A French drain is a perforated pipe installed at the base of the wall that collects and redirects water away from the structure. It’s surrounded by gravel and wrapped in filter fabric to prevent clogs. French drains are particularly useful for larger retaining walls or areas with poor natural drainage. They ensure that groundwater and rain runoff are managed efficiently.

Drainage Pipes and Outlets

Drainage pipes work similarly to French drains but are sometimes used in conjunction with weep holes or gravel backfill to move water even more efficiently. These pipes are routed behind or beneath the wall and channel water to a safe discharge area, such as a storm drain, dry well, or lower portion of the yard. Installing drainage outlets at strategic locations allows water to escape quickly.

Proper Grading and Surface Drainage

Good drainage doesn’t stop at the wall; it begins at the surface. The land around your retaining wall should be graded so that water naturally flows away from the wall instead of toward it. Redirecting roof runoff, downspouts, and irrigation systems can also help prevent water from pooling near the base of the structure.

Proper drainage protects your retaining wall and the surrounding landscape. Even the strongest materials obtained from a reputable precast company and the best construction techniques will eventually fail. Water damage is not only expensive to repair but can also create safety hazards and lead to property loss.
